Systemic Approach to Safety: Highlights from 5 Peer Exchanges
Tuesday, December 14, 2021 6:00:00 PM UTC - 9:00:00 PM UTC
Rural roadway departures make up a third of U.S. traffic fatalities—about 30 people a day. The Every Day Counts initiative, Focus on Reducing Rural Roadway Departures (FoRRRwD), features four pillars:
•	Addressing All Public Roads
•	Systemic Approach
•	Safety Action Plans,
•	Proven Countermeasures
The FoRRRwD Team hosted five virtual peer exchanges this summer. Participants from a wide variety of agencies across the country discussed current practices with the Systemic Approach and how to improve the process. We wish you could have all been part of that, but this webinar is the next best thing – it will provide presentations and highlights from each of the discussion topic areas:
•	What is Systemic? Why Systemic?
•	Data Needs & Risk Factors
•	Analysis & Prioritization of Systemic Projects
•	Evaluating the Program & Institutionalizing
State, local, and tribal stakeholders – come and learn how you can better use the Systemic Approach to save more lives in your community or jurisdiction.
Speakers and Topics to be covered include:
•	Karen Scurry, FHWA Office of Safety – Karen will briefly present why the systemic approach is so critical a component of driving down crashes – especially rural roadway departures. She will also discuss how it is different from, yet complements, other approaches.
•	Nicole Moore, Iowa DOT and Molly O’Brien, Kimley Horn – Nicole will provide background on Local Road Safety Plans and Molly will present the data and risk factors used in the systemic analysis for the county plans in Iowa.
•	Scott Neidert, DelDOT – Scott will cover the evolution of analyzing and prioritizing projects with the systemic approach in Delaware.
•	Mike Vaughn, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet – Mike will discuss how Kentucky has institutionalized the concept of the systemic approach.
